Living in Eindhoven

Eindhoven lies on the sandy soils of Brabant. Sand supports a house much better than peat or clay, so foundation problems like those in the west of the Netherlands are far less common here.

The city grew quickly in the 20th century, partly thanks to Philips, so there are many residential areas from the 1920s to 1960s. On sandy soil, many of these homes have shallow foundations without piles.

Foundations in Eindhoven

55% of the 133,421 buildings in Eindhoven were built before 1970. In the west and north of the Netherlands, homes from that period often stand on wooden piles.

Hardly any buildings in Eindhoven combine soft soil with a construction year before 1970, so our check rarely shows ‘Needs attention’ here.
