Living in Almere

Almere is one of the youngest cities in the Netherlands. It lies in the Flevopolder, on land reclaimed in the 1960s, with soft soil of clay and peat.

The first homes were completed in 1976, so almost every building dates from after 1970 and stands on concrete piles. That keeps the foundation risk low here, despite the soft soil.
