Living in Den Haag
The Hague sits partly on sand from old dunes and beach ridges along the coast, and partly on peat and clay further inland. Many neighbourhoods around the centre, such as the Zeeheldenkwartier, Statenkwartier and Schilderswijk, were built before the Second World War.
On the sandy soil, foundation problems are less likely than in the lower-lying peat areas. After 1970 the city grew mainly with new districts such as Ypenburg and Leidschenveen, built on concrete piles.
